David Russell

GRAMMY award winner in 2005 for his CD AIRE LATINO, in the category of best instrumental soloist in classical music.
Classical guitarist David Russell is world renowned for his superb musicianship and inspired artistry, having earned the highest praise from audiences and critics alike. In recognition of his great talent and his international career, he was named a Fellow of The Royal Academy of Music in London in 1997.
In May 2003 he was bestowed the great honor of being made "adopted son" of Es Migjorn, the town in Minorca where he grew up. Later the town named a street after him, "Avinguda David Russell".
In November 2003 he was given the Medal of Honor of the Conservatory of the Balearics.
After winning the grammy award, the town of Nigrán in Spain where he resides, gave him the silver medal of the town in an emotional ceremony.
During his studies at the Royal Academy, Mr. Russell won twice the Julian Bream Guitar Prize. Later he won numerous international competitions, including the Andrés Segovia Competition , the José Ramírez Competition and Spain's prestigious Francisco Tárrega Competition .
David Russell spends his time touring the world, appearing regularly at prestigious halls in main cities, such as New York, London, Tokyo, Los Angeles, Madrid, Toronto or Rome. Concert-goers everywhere are in awe of Mr. Russell's musical genius and inspired by his captivating stage presence. His love of his craft resonates through his flawless and seemingly effortless performance. The attention to detail and provocative lyrical phrasing suggest an innate understanding of what each individual composer was working to achieve, bringing to each piece a sense of adventure.
In May 2005 he received a homage from the music conservatory of Vigo, culminating with the opening of the new Auditorium, to which they gave the name "Auditorio David Russell".
Since 1995 David Russell has an exclusive recording contract with Telarc International, with whom he has recorded twelve CDs up to now, among them Aire Latino, which received a grammy in 2005.
The New York Times wrote about his performance: "... Mr. Russell made his mastery evident without ever deviating from an approach that places musical values above mere display. It was apparent to the audience throughout the recital that Mr. Russell possesses a talent of extraordinary dimension".
Upon hearing play in London, Andrés Segovia wrote: "My congratulations on your musicality and guitaristic technique".

Elektra Women's Choir
Elektra Women’s Choir was founded by Co-Conductors Morna Edmundson and Diane Loomer, C.M. in 1987 and is regarded as a leader in the classical women’s choir movement worldwide. Its mandate is to inspire and lead in the choral art form through excellence in performance and the creation, exploration, and celebration of women’s repertoire. Elektra is known for its adventurous programming, seeking out music written specifically for women and frequently commissioning new works. (www.elektra.ca/choir)
Of particular note, is the Elekra Women's Choir's web site. It is well-organized and offers valuable information (repertoire and recordings) for conductors as well as choral music lovers in general. Bang on a Can All-Stars
The Bang on a Can All-Stars is the primary performing ensemble of umbrella organization, Bang on a Can. Formed in 1987, Bang on a Can, is dedicated to commissioning, performing, creating, presenting and recording contemporary music. "With an ear for the new, the unknown and the unconventional, Bang on a Can strives to expose exciting and innovative music as broadly and accessibly as possible to new audiences worldwide. And through its Summer Festival, Bang on a Can hopes to bring this energy and passion for innovation to a younger generation of composers and players."
Bang on a Can has been called "the country's most important vehicle for contemporary music." It was founded in 1987 by three friends, Michael Gordon, David Lang and Julia Wolfe concerned with the future of contemporary music.
Originally a one-day festival, Bang on a Can has grown into a larger, multi-faceted organization
that includes projects such as festival concerts and the annual Bang on a Can Marathon; The People's Commissioning Fund, a membership program to commission emerging composers; the Bang on a Can All-Stars, who tour to major festivals and concert venues around the world every year; recording projects; the Bang on a Can Summer Music Festival & Institute - a professional development program for young composers and performers; and cross-disciplinary collaborations and projects with DJs, visual artists, choreographers, filmmakers and more. "Our innovative and aggressive approach to programming and presentation has created a large and vibrant international audience made up of people of all ages who are rediscovering the value of contemporary music."

ANUNA
ANUNA, the unique and refreshing choral group based in Dublin, Ireland, was founded by composer and singer, Michael McGlynn. The group began and gained international attention when it performed in the original production of Michael Flatley's RIVERDANCE. Since RIVERDANCE, ANUNA has steadily progressed as an independent ensemble, maintianing a unique choral sound, theatrical presentation, and repertoire consisting almost exclusively of McGlynn early chant and folk song arrangements and original compositions. In 2007, the group reached a new pinnacle with its own production of CELTIC ORIGINS, touring the show throughout the United States and airing it on PBS Television.
